Wine lovers have got another reason to drink daily after a new study conducted by Australian researchers revealed that alcohol actually perks up men's sexual performance.

Contrary to popular belief that drinking can cause erectile dysfunction, also called impotence or 'brewer's droop,' the latest discovery to be published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine suggests alcohol consumption actually improves men's performance in the bedroom.

To reach their findings, a team of Australian researchers conducted the study on 1580 men, and found that drinkers were 30 percent less likely to report problems than those who never drank.

Surprisingly, the rate of erectile dysfunction was lower in binge drinkers, weekend drinkers, high-risk drinkers and those who exceeded guidelines than teetotalers or those who drank one day a week or less.

Ex-drinkers, smokers and cardiovascular disease patients, however, had the highest risk.

"We found that, compared to those who have never touched alcohol, many people do benefit from some alcohol, including some people who drink outside the guidelines,'''' said lead researcher Dr Kew-Kim Chew, of Western Australia''s Keogh Institute for Medical Research.

Dr Chew, however, stressed men who consumed alcohol within safe guidelines appeared to have the best erectile function.

America's Dietary Guidelines, issued in association with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, urge men to drink no more than two standard drinks a day, and women to consume no more than one standard drink per day.

"These findings suggest a favourable association between low-risk drinking and positive erectile function," Dr Chew said.

Impotence, often called erectile dysfunction, is a man's inability to achieve or maintain an erection of the penis long enough to participate fully in sexual intercourse.
